FINCA SA TEULERA

This is the Mallorquian farm where I get the organic food for my delivery service.  It is on the east coast of the island near Manacor and is open 3 days a week to the general public, if you want a nice day out and see the farm for yourself then please do so, directions at the foot of the page.

For most people the farm is a bit far away to go every week to get the fresh produce, that’s where I can help by hand picking your items for you and delivering to your door once or even twice a week.

It is a real farm, you can see the animals and people working in harmony to bring you healthy and happy food.  They have their own dairy cattle which produce fresh un-pasteurised milk; this in turn makes natural yogurt and three types of cheese – all available at the farm or with my delivery service.

There are also pigs, chickens, ducks and sheep – some meat is available but this needs to be sourced direct from the farm.  Many other animals and birds can be seen: cats, dogs, peacocks and even parrots are in or around the farmyard.  Look closely at the picture below and you will see one of the grey parrots in the top right hand corner, they are both very talkative and enjoy a chat!

The farm produces a lot of seasonal fruit, vegetables and salad throughout the year.  It is a constant balancing act to grow the right amount to supply customers without wasting resources and having to throw food away – the animals get to enjoy the surplus rather than it being thrown in the bin of course.

As each week passes new items are available and others are no longer in season, this is a very natural way to live and eat as well as being a great source of anticipation as you wait for your favourite food to ripen in the sun before being picked.  Juan, the farmer and finca owner, will check the shop and if something is running low he will send out the tractor to get some more – brilliant!, and extremely fresh.

The island can’t produce everything and some items are therefore imported.  They don’t go over the top and get things flown on from all around the world; they get other organic produce from different parts of Spain and the Mediterranean – including North Africa.  This can offer a surprising amount of variety, including: avocados, kiwis, bananas, mangos, mushrooms, coconuts, pineapples, dates, walnuts…..

Mallorca has ideal soil to grow citrus fruits, olives, pears, apples, almonds and a wide variety of salads and greens so there is always something new being harvested or prepared.  Where the farm is situated, in the fertile plains, the ground is best for field crops in particular and you will notice the very deep red colour of the soil in the area that is missing from other parts of the island.  The main focus of the finca is the rotation of these seasonal field crops.

To add to all this variety there is also a fully operational bakery supplying many cakes, savouries and breads to the whole island.  Several local specialities are available at the shop like cocas (pastry base with assorted toppings), cocarrois (pies & pasties to you and I), galletes (whole grain biscuits), quiche, special pizzas and many different assorted breads – brown, white, mixed and spelt are lovingly made just yards away from the shop.

The cakes can be bought whole or in slices, you may consider purchasing a whole cake for a party or if you have some special guests over for a meal.  They are made to traditional recipes but use whole grain and organic ingredients which make them very filling and just as good for you as much as they are a sweet treat.  I have to test them constantly to make sure they are ok for delivery, no problems so far…. The chocolate chip cookies need my weekly attention in particular….

And finally, a range of useful extras to complete a well balanced selection: rice, pasta, lentils, chick peas, muesli, olive oil, wine, honey, conserves, soy sauce, vinegars…. and so on.  These can be added to your order or picked up by yourself if you visit the finca.  It is all certified organic and local where ever possible.

The dairy includes: un-pasteurised milk, natural yogurt, butter, three types of cheese – hard, soft, semi, and super fresh free range eggs.

There are two ways to get to the farm.  Travel on the C715 towards Manacor, when you are about 5 kilometres away there will be two petrol stations either side of the road.  Take the next turning left after that, a small sign for a neighbouring farm will say “Son Nouviet”.  Follow the road for about 1.5k to reach the farm shop, stay on the track that has the best surface and you can’t go far wrong.

Alternative route:

Travel on the PM332 from Petra to Manacor.  A railway line will be on your right hand side for a good part of your journey.  When you are about 5k away from Manacor you will see a pair of signs on the right which say “Sa Teulera”, drive over the railway bridge and along the track and it will bring you to the car park outside the farm shop.
